Chinese five spice

Chinese five spice

The "five" in Five Spice refers to the balance of the five basic elements: earth, fire, water, wood, and metal and not the number of spices in the blend. It was originally used in Chinese medicine to restore the balance of the five elements in the Chi or the life energy in our bodies. Though we cannot promise our blend will restore your inner well being, we are sure it will be gastronomically gratifying.

Throughout Asia, cooking is a balance between sweet, sour, bitter, hot, and salty. Five spice is often found in dishes that exemplify this balance. It is particularly popular and delicious for slow cooked stews of meat in rich dark sauces. The fruitiness of this spice blend is excellent with the richness of pork and duck. This blend is increasingly popular in fusion cooking.

Try rubbing a duck breast with five spice, salt and pepper and roasting for 15mins in a very hot oven 200 – 220C. Drizzle with a little honey and serve with stir-fried vegetables, rice or noodles. Wonderful

At this time organic Sichuan peppercorns are not available. Our blend is still 79% organic.

Blend contains: star anis, cinnamon, sichuan pepper, cumin, coriander and cloves.
