Chop the fresh and dried figs. Open the wine and pour half of it into a heavy-based casserole. Add to the pot all the remaining ingredients except the sugar, and place over a high heat. Bring to the boil and as soon as it reaches that point remove from the heat. Stir in the sugar until dissolved, then set aside to cool slightly. Mix with the remaining wine. Serve warm or room temperature.
